I understand that on October 10, 2017, mainstream support will end on Office for Mac 2011. But this does not mean that customers and resellers are no longer allowed to use or resell this software.
When mainstream support ends, this is what occurs:
- Microsoft no longer supplies non-security hotfixes unless you have an extended support agreement
- All warranty claims end
- Microsoft no long accepts requests for new features and design changes
What does Mainstream Support mean though? This is the first phase of support that Microsoft provides for most of its products and services. It lasts for five years and includes the following:
- Incident support which includes no charge, paid and warranty claims.
- Security updates
- Ability to request hotfixes that are not security related
This means that even if it's no longer under mainstream support, it is still legal for vendors to resell the software.
